HVAC in Sulphur, LA

Sulphur at a glance

Sulphur is a city of 21,809 people (2020 census) near the center of Calcasieu Parish, on Interstate 10 about nine miles west of Lake Charles and 20 miles from the Texas line. U.S. Route 90 runs through town as Napoleon Street.

What that means for your HVAC

The neighborhoods of Maplewood and Hollywood were developed in the 1940s to house refinery workers, so Sulphur has plenty of mid-century homes that were built before central air was common. Systems added later often have ducts squeezed into tight attics. If some rooms never cool, see ductwork.

Industrial air

Much of the local economy still runs on refineries and petrochemical plants. Dust and airborne grime can clog filters and coat outdoor coils faster than in a quieter town, so check filters often and have the coil cleaned at each tune-up. See HVAC maintenance.

Frasch and the sulfur mines

Sulphur is named for the sulfur mines that operated here. In 1867 a geologist found sulfur in a salt dome, but mining it was deadly until Herman Frasch invented a method of pumping superheated water underground to melt it. The first molten sulfur reached the surface on Christmas Eve 1894, and the town incorporated in 1914. The Citgo refinery arrived in 1943. Homes from the boom years that still run original or decades-old equipment are good candidates for AC replacement.
