HVAC in Prien, LA

Prien at a glance

Prien is a census-designated place of 7,745 people (2020 census) on the south side of Lake Charles. The original community sits on the southeast shore of Prien Lake, a widening in the Calcasieu River, and the area stretches south to West Gauthier Road.

What that means for your HVAC

Homes on and near the lake live with the highest humidity in an already humid city. If the house feels cool but sticky, or you notice mold on vent covers, the system may not be removing enough moisture; see humidity control.

Part city, part parish

Some Prien neighborhoods have been annexed into Lake Charles, shrinking the census area by 1.3 square miles since 2000. Whether a permit for a new system goes through the city or the parish depends on which side of the line your home sits. Your contractor can check before work starts.

Near the airport

Lake Charles Regional Airport sits in unincorporated Calcasieu Parish about five nautical miles south of downtown, bounded by Gauthier Road to the north. During Hurricane Laura in 2020 the airport recorded a gust of 133 mph and several hangars were destroyed. Homes in the open land around Prien and the airport take the full force of storm winds; after a big storm, have the outdoor unit and attic ductwork checked before running the system. See storm damage repair.
