How Do I Protect My AC Before a Hurricane in Lake Charles?

Before the storm: clear the yard, secure the outdoor unit, and know where the disconnect is. Cut power to the system before the storm arrives. After: don't switch on a unit that flooded or was hit until a technician has checked it.

Why it matters here

Hurricane Laura brought 150 mph winds in 2020, and Hurricane Delta followed weeks later. Outdoor units were knocked off pads, flooded and filled with debris across the region.

Before the storm

Pick up anything that could blow into the unit. Check the tie-downs or straps if your unit has them. Take photos of the equipment and its labels for insurance.

Cut the power

Turn the system off at the thermostat, then at the breaker and the outdoor disconnect, so a power surge or flooding can't damage it.

Should I cover the unit?

Don't wrap it in plastic for the whole storm; trapped moisture causes rust. Some people cover the top only. Remove any cover before running the system.

After the storm

Look for debris, damage and standing water. If water reached the unit's electrical parts, keep it off and send a request. See storm damage repair.

Mold after a storm

If the power was out for days, the house may have soaked up humidity. Run the AC and a dehumidifier once it's safe, and watch for musty smells.

Generators

If you use a portable generator, keep it outside and away from windows, doors and the outdoor AC unit. Most portable generators can't run central air; a whole-home generator sized for the AC is a separate project for a licensed electrician.

Raising equipment

If your outdoor unit has flooded before, ask about raising it on a stand above likely flood levels at your next replacement.
